B.C. driver's licence and test fees
ICBC's fee page lists every driver licensing fee in one table, split by licence and by test. This post gathers the ones a new driver meets, from the knowledge test to the first full licence, with the changes that start on 19 October 2026. For how the tests themselves work, see our article on the Class 7 road test.
Knowledge test and learner stage
A knowledge test is $15 for each attempt, including the retest you have to take once a learner's licence has expired; it is free for people 65 and over (ICBC: Fees). The Class 7 or 8 photo learner's licence, including its renewals and replacement, is $10 (ICBC: Fees).
Road tests
A Class 7 or 8 road test under the Graduated Licensing Program is $35, and a Class 5 or 6 road test is $50 (ICBC: Fees). From 19 October 2026, the fee for a Class 7 or 8 road test goes up to $50 (ICBC: Fees).
All road tests are free for people 65 and over (ICBC: Fees). The road test fee covers the test only; a licence fee may apply on top (ICBC: Fees).
If you cancel a booked road test with less than 48 hours' notice, there is a $25 cancellation fee (ICBC: Fees). The test itself is charged each time you take it, which is covered in our articles on retaking a test and changing or cancelling a road test.
Licences
The fee depends on which licence you are getting and how long it lasts, all from ICBC's fee page (ICBC: Fees):
- First 5-year novice licence: $75
- First 2-year licence, for non-learner drivers moving to B.C.: $31
- 5-year licence renewal: $75
- 5-year renewal for people 65 and over: $17
- Replacement licence if lost or stolen, or an upgraded licence: $17
- Two-year licence reinstatement: $31
A licence that expires within 180 days counts as a renewal, and the new licence runs for five years from your next birthday (ICBC: Fees).
Paying
Driver licensing offices take cash, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, debit cards and personal cheques (ICBC: Fees). Online knowledge tests are paid by credit card when you register (ICBC: Take the online knowledge test).
Medical exams and BCID
A few fees sit outside the licence and test tables:
- A medical exam processing fee, required by RoadSafetyBC at the time of an upgrade and every five years at renewal, is $28 for Classes 1 to 4 and for a Class 5 with endorsement 18, 19 or 20 (ICBC: Fees).
- An original BC Services Card and BC Identification card (BCID), valid for five years, is $35; a replacement or renewal is $15, and the same $15 applies to people 65 and over (ICBC: Fees).
- Re-exams initiated by RoadSafetyBC are free (ICBC: Fees).
What to check before you pay
ICBC's fee page is the source, and amounts change. ICBC has announced one change for 2026: the Class 7 and 8 road test fee goes to $50 on 19 October 2026 (ICBC: Fees). Before you book or renew, check the fee page or ask at the office (ICBC: Fees).
For the knowledge test itself, you can work through our free question bank, written by us from Learn to Drive Smart. They are our own questions, not ICBC's, and they cover the knowledge test, not the road test.
