Failed the ICBC knowledge test? When you can take it again

If you do not pass the knowledge test, ICBC lets you try again soon. How soon depends on whether you take it at an office or online, and you will find more than one number in ICBC's own material. Here is what each source says.

At a driver licensing office: one day

ICBC's "Get your L" page says you may try again one day after a failed attempt, and that every attempt has a fee (ICBC: Get your L). The current Learn to Drive Smart guide says the same: its retest table lists one day for the knowledge test after the first, the second, and the third or any later failed attempt (Learn to Drive Smart, inside front cover and inside back cover).

Online: 24 hours

For the online test, ICBC says you can retake it after 24 hours. You register again and pay the test fee again (ICBC: Take the online knowledge test). The same 24 hours applies if you are disqualified. Three disqualifications mean you cannot take the test online for six months; in some places on the same page ICBC says "at least six months" (ICBC). You can still take the test at an office during that time.

Where "7 days" comes from

An older ICBC PDF, "What to take to the driver licensing office", is still online and gives a different table: 7 days after each failed knowledge test (ICBC PDF). That document still describes the test as taken only at driver licensing locations, so it predates the online test. The current guide and ICBC's web pages say one day in person and 24 hours online.

What each attempt costs

ICBC's fee page lists $15 for each knowledge test attempt, free for seniors 65 and over (ICBC: Fees). Online, you pay the $15 again when you register again (ICBC).

Things that make the wait longer

ICBC's tip sheet for in-person tests says that talking, using study materials, or using any electronic device during the test results in an automatic fail "and time out from taking your next test" (ICBC tip sheet). It does not say how long that time-out is.

Road tests are different

Do not mix this up with the road test. After a failed Class 5 to 8 road test, the guide lists 14 days after the first attempt, 30 days after the second, and 60 days after any later attempt (Learn to Drive Smart, inside back cover).

The knowledge test again, later

Your learner's licence is valid for two years. If it expires, you take the knowledge test again (ICBC: Get your L), and ICBC's fee page counts that as another attempt (ICBC: Fees).

Using the day in between

ICBC points people who failed to Learn to Drive Smart and its online practice test (ICBC). You can also work through our free practice questions, which we wrote from that guide. They are not ICBC's test questions, and practising them is no promise about your result.
