Slow down and move over: emergency and roadside vehicles

Learn to Drive Smart · LTDS-2026-03 · Chapter 6 · Stopped vehicles with flashing lights

Emergency vehicles displaying flashing lights and siren always have the right-of-way. Pull over and let them pass; use your turn signal so the driver knows you have seen them. If you are stopped at an intersection and blocking their path, you may have to turn the corner to get out of the way. Once one has passed, keep watching and listening — there may be others. Stay back at least 150 metres from an emergency vehicle that is responding.
