School buses, school and playground zones

Learn to Drive Smart · LTDS-2026-03 · Chapter 6 · School buses

Alternating flashing red lights on a school bus mean stop — from either direction, in every lane. Approaching from the front or the rear makes no difference, and neither does how many lanes the road has.

Amber lights flashing alternately are the warning stage: the driver is preparing to stop. Some buses also swing out a stop sign when they stop.
