Choosing and tracking your lane
Learn to Drive Smart · LTDS-2026-03 · Chapter 4 · Which lane should you use?
Choose the lane that gives you the best vision and lets you go where you are going. Those two criteria usually agree; when they do not, vision wins, because the lane that lets you see is the lane that lets you react.
On a multi-lane highway, travel in one of the right-hand lanes. On a freeway with more than two lanes each way, use the centre or a right-hand lane and leave the left for higher-speed traffic and passing. Driving at the speed limit is not a reason to sit in the left lane — it pushes other drivers to pass on the right, which is less safe than passing on the left.
