Yellow and white lines
Learn to Drive Smart · LTDS-2026-03 · Chapter 3 · Yellow lines
One rule sorts every line on the road: yellow separates opposing traffic, white separates traffic going the same way. If there is a yellow line to your left, someone is coming towards you on the other side of it.
Yellow:
- Broken — passing is allowed when safe.
- Broken beside solid — you may pass only when it is safe and the broken line is on your side.
- Double solid — no passing.
- Single yellow line — passing is allowed, with extra caution.
- Double broken — a reversible lane; the lane control signal overhead says whether you may use it.
- Two-way left-turn lane — drivers from both directions share this lane to turn left. The markings can appear reversed, with the solid lines inside the broken ones.
White:
- Solid — do not change lanes.
- Broken — lane changing is allowed when safe.
- Stop line — stop before it, not on it.
- Crosswalk markings — stop for pedestrians in the crosswalk.
One rule people forget: it is illegal to drive over freshly painted, wet pavement markings.
