Lane use, turn control, reserved lane and parking signs

Learn to Drive Smart · LTDS-2026-03 · Chapter 3 · Lane use signs

These four families all answer "where may this vehicle be, and when?"

Lane use signs sit above a lane or beside it before the intersection and show which movements that lane allows. Once you are in a designated lane you must follow its arrows — and you may not move into or out of a designated lane while you are inside the intersection.

Turn control signs are mounted directly above the intersection and you must follow the arrow: left turn only, straight through only, right or left only, or no right turns during the posted times.

Reserved lane signs mark lanes set aside for particular vehicles — buses, or high occupancy vehicles (HOVs) carrying a stated number of people. On the road surface the same lane is marked with a white diamond. Some signs warn that the curb lane of the cross street ahead is reserved.

Parking signs say where and when parking is allowed. Getting it wrong can mean a fine, a tow, or both. Read the hours before you read the symbol: many of these signs prohibit only during posted times, and a disabled parking sign restricts the space to a vehicle displaying the permit and carrying a person with disabilities.
