Seatbelts and child restraints

Learn to Drive Smart · LTDS-2026-03 · Chapter 2 · Safety restraints for children

Seatbelts. Two reasons: they significantly reduce your chance of serious injury or death, and it is the law in B.C. — you can be fined for not wearing one.

Fit matters as much as wearing it. Snug over the chest and low over the hips. Never put the shoulder strap under your arm or behind your back, and do not wear it with a reclined seat — the belt over the wrong part of the body causes serious internal injuries in a collision. A pregnant passenger keeps the lap belt snug and below the baby. Buckle up even on short trips: most injuries and deaths happen close to home.
